Arthritis Advocates Travel to Washington, DC

On February 27 & 28, 2007, the Arthritis Foundation, Carolinas Chapter sent a contingent of volunteer advocates to Washington, DC to meet with Congressional representatives from North and South Carolina.  Susan and Erin Eaton,  Michelle Gautier, Bettina and John Henry Nolan, Tom Gibson and Gail Norman from NC and Ilene and Ashley Shiansky from SC met with both Senators Richard Burr and Elizabeth Dole from NC and Senators Lindsey Graham and Jim DeMitt from South Carolina and their staff members as well as with local members of the House of Representatives.

The advocates were there to remind Congress of the impact of arthritis on America and the need to devote more federal dollars to the National Institute of Health to fund crucial arthritis research efforts.  The high costs of care and arthritis medications were also addressed.  The advocates urged passage of the Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act, landmark legislature that will go a long way toward improving the quality of life for all Americans affected by arthritis.

How You Can Help

The Arthritis Foundation promotes government and private sector action to improve the lives of the 66 million Americans living with arthritis. But we need your help to get more government funding for arthritis research, to encourage early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment, and to improve access to quality health care for everyone with arthritis.

Visit www.arthritis.org/advocacy/ for tools you need to become informed about the issues and to make your voice heard. You will find issue "backgrounders," Arthritis Foundation position statements, as well as links to other Web sites that may be helpful.
