Funding opportunities will be announced May 1.  We anticipate that we will offer the following awards:

Chapter Grants - Some chapters of the Arthritis Foundation offer grants to meet unique research needs in the chapter area. The purpose of these grants programs is to fund highly meritorious and innovative research programs that meet the mission of the Arthritis Foundation within that chapter area. In order to submit an application for this type of grant, a researcher must be responding to a request for proposals from their chapter area and must have the appropriate chapter code in order to process the application on line. The amount and duration, as well as the character, eligibility and purpose of a Chapter Grant, are determined by the chapter issuing the RFP. Apply now.

TRAINING AWARDS

Training Awards are intended to provide the support for young investigators at the beginning of their research careers as they investigate questions related to arthritis and musculoskeletal diseases. These awards typically cover the cost of salary only.  The institution or supervisor is expected to cover other costs associated with the training of this specialist.

Postdoctoral Fellowship -The purpose of the Arthritis Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship is to encourage qualified physicians and scientists to embark on careers in research related to the understanding of arthritis and the rheumatic diseases.  This award provides a salary stipend for MDs, DOs, PhDs, or equivalent for up to three years.  The second year of the award will be based on project progress; the third year will be issued after a competitive renewal.  Renewal will be based on the progress of the project, publications and demonstration of professional presentations. Ninety percent time must be devoted to arthritis-related research.  The award amount is $50,000/year for salary or stipend. Apply now.

Postdoctoral Fellowship - Program Guidelines

Doctoral Dissertation Award for Arthritis Health Professionals - The purpose of the Doctoral Dissertation Award is to advance the research training of arthritis health professionals in their investigative or clinical teaching careers related to the rheumatic diseases. This award provides one or two years of salary and/or research support.  The research project must be related to arthritis management and/or comprehensive patient care in rheumatology practice, research or education. Not for laboratory research. The award is for $30,000 per year. Apply now.

Doctoral Dissertation Award - Program Guidelines

CAREER DEVELOPMENT AWARDS

Career Development Awards are intended to provide the support for young investigators at a critical point in their development toward independent research in a variety of arthritis related areas. These grants typically cover the cost of salaries, consumable supplies, equipment, travel and other items to conduct the proposed research. Applicants must be establishing their first independent, self-directed laboratory for which the institution provides space and other resources.

Arthritis Investigator Award - The purpose of the Arthritis Investigator Award is to provide support to physicians and scientists in research fields related to arthritis for the period between completion of postdoctoral fellowship training and establishment as an independent investigator. This support is available to sustain individuals committed to a career in arthritis related research until full independence as an investigator can be obtained.  It provides salary and/or grant support for two to four years.  A competitive renewal application is required at the end of the second year. MDs, DOs, PhDs, or equivalent that have a minimum of three years of research experience, a maximum of six years, but are not yet established as an independent investigator, are eligible. The award requires an 80% time commitment in arthritis-related research.  Renewal requires demonstration of some of the following indicators:  publications and/or presentations in arthritis related topics; additional dollars generated from other sources for continuation of arthritis related questions; professional leadership responsibility and activity demonstrated. The award amount is $75,000 for the first two years and $90,000 per year after a competitive renewal. Apply now.

Arthritis Investigator Award - Program Guidelines

New Investigator Grant For Arthritis Health Professionals - This grant is offered to encourage individuals in health care to carry out innovative research projects in areas related to arthritis and the rheumatic diseases. The award provides salary and research expenses for up to three-years.  The second year of the award will be based on project progress, and the third year will be issued after a competitive renewal.  Renewal will be based on the progress of the project, publications and demonstration of professional presentations.  This is for PhD’s or equivalent committed to arthritis related research questions. Not for laboratory research. MDs are not eligible. The award amount is $50,000 per year. Apply now.

New Investigator Award - Program Guidelines

ESTABLISHED INVESTIGATOR AWARDS

Established Investigator Awards are intended to provide the resources for investigator-initiated research in a variety of arthritis related areas.  These grants typically cover the cost of salaries, consumable supplies, equipment, travel and other items to conduct the proposed research.  Applications must be independent, self-directed researchers for whom the institution provides space and other resources.

Innovative Research Grant - The purpose of this grant is to broaden the base of inquiry in fundamental biomedical science, clinical research or behavioral research with relevance to rheumatic disease by encouraging applications for research proposals that involve an especially high degree of innovation and novelty or represent a special opportunity to address unique and relevant research questions. Research projects proposed may involve substantial experimental risks with the potential for highly significant outcomes. The award will provide support to explore innovative or novel ideas with little or no preliminary data.  Established investigators with any terminal degree are invited to apply. The award amount is up to $100,000 per year for two years. No more than five grants will be funded. Apply now.
